# Valley Bowmen of Huddersfield
Valley Bowmen of Huddersfield is a community amateur sports club dedicated to archery, welcoming adults, juniors, and archers of all abilities and bow styles. Founded in 1963 by Ricky Farrar and affiliated with ArcheryGB, the club operates from a private two-acre field on Knowle Lane near Meltham, offering 24-hour access to outdoor ranges.
The club serves both competitive archers—many of whom have represented Yorkshire and GB—and casual, social participants seeking recreational enjoyment. Their Level 1 & 2 qualified coaches provide structured support for shooting development at all levels.
What sets Valley Bowmen apart is their comprehensive facilities. The on-site Farrar Pavilion, built with a £50,000 Sport England grant in 2013, provides secure storage, kitchen, and fully accessible toilet facilities. A subsequent 2020 Sport England grant funded a permanent indoor shooting range, transforming winter participation by enabling year-round daily shooting regardless of weather—previously limited to two weekly sessions at local sports centres.
The club runs beginner courses throughout the year alongside taster sessions for groups, corporate teams, and charitable organisations wanting to experience archery. With approximately 200 members and over six decades of history, Valley Bowmen have established themselves as a cornerstone of local amateur sport, combining competitive opportunity with welcoming recreational access.
